Southern Arkansas University student Eli Lindsey, 20, of Casscoe, is among 19 pediatric cancer survivors selected this year to receive Dennis Jungmeyer Scholarships valued at $2,500 each and awarded by the CARTI Foundation in Little Rock.

Presented annually to current or former CARTI pediatric cancer patients, the scholarships are named in honor of cancer survivor and CARTI Foundation Board director-emeritus Dennis Jungmeyer of North Little Rock. Jungmeyer is a co-founder of the CARTI Kids Golf Classic, proceeds of which benefit CARTI Kid programs and activities. Established in 1986, the tournament has since raised more than $2 million.

Lindsey was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in 2000 and received treatment at CARTI/St. Vincent. A graduate of Stuttgart High, he is currently enrolled at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia where he is majoring in history with a minor in education. He is the son of Kris and Kelly Lindsey of Casscoe.

“I guess you can’t have brain surgery and not expect a lot of changes,” wrote Lindsey in his scholarship essay. “The thing is, when you’re 11, you can’t even begin to imagine what life will be like afterwards. I guess this might be a good thing, because sometimes, if you knew, you might not fight so hard to stay alive.”

In addition to Lindsey, other 2008 Jungmeyer Scholarship recipients are: Meagan Aitchison, of Greenbrier; Miranda Baird, of Fayetteville; Morgan Butler, of Hope; Zykeya Butler, of Ruston, LA; Lauren Crook, of Benton; Ben Dalton, of Sherwood; Amelia Floriani, of Malvern; Amy Garrett, of Quitman; Alex Giannavola, of Little Rock; Ethan Helm, of Mabelvale; Ryne Johnson, of Maumelle; Adrian Landis, of Fouke; Kevin Leon, of Siloam Springs; Archie Lester, Jr., of West Memphis; Celso Medina, of Fort Smith; Clayton Mitchell, of Paragould; Patty Morris, of Berryville; and Jessica Odle, of Little Rock.

Scholarship recipients were honored at a special presentation ceremony held June 25 at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion in Little Rock. First Lady Ginger Beebe assisted Jungmeyer in presenting scholars with their awards.

“To the Jungmeyer Scholars of 2008, we offer not only our congratulations, but also our admiration and appreciation,” said Rick Fleetwood, chairman of the CARTI Foundation Board of Directors, while addressing the audience during the presentation ceremony.

“You have already faced some of the most difficult obstacles life can present, and you have learned to use your experiences to encourage and inspire others,” said Fleetwood. “You have every right to be proud of yourselves not only as scholars, but as survivors. And we appreciate you allowing us to share in a portion of that pride.”

CARTI is a nonprofit radiation therapy center with facilities located in Little Rock on the St. Vincent, Baptist Medical Center and UAMS campuses, and in Conway, Mountain Home, North Little Rock and Searcy. The CARTI Foundation was incorporated in 1983 as a non-profit organization to assist CARTI in meeting the current and future needs of Arkansas cancer patients and their families.

MAGNOLIA—- Students of the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta have reason to be proud according to professor and organization sponsor Dr. Shannin Schroeder.

Select members of the organization traveled to Louisville, Ky., March 5-8 to host the Sigma Tau Delta International Convention, which was chaired by Schroeder herself. Sarah Tutt, Anwar Fairley, Matt Bates, Kayla Henderson, Micah Hicks, Girwan Khadka and Ashlie Mixon were the students involved in assisting Schroeder and making sure the event went smoothly.

In addition to orchestrating fundraising sessions and helping with convention registration, these students also submitted their own work to the event’s writing competitions. Sarah Tutt’s essay on “necessary contradictions” (the convention theme) was a category finalist and Micah Hicks won first place and $500 in the fiction/drama category. Hicks also received the $4000 Sigma Tau Delta scholarship and serves as one of two student advisors to the national board.

In addition to participating in workshops and presenting their work, students were also able to hear from noted poet Naomi Shihab Nye and dramatist Suzan-Lori Parks.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. –The Arkansas Department of Higher Education and the Arkansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators will host the Arkansas College Goal Sunday Program from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center on the campus of Southern Arkansas University.

The College Goal Sunday program provides college bound students and families with free assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the college financial aid application. Financial aid administrators from across Arkansas will be available to offer hands-on assistance in completing the college financial aid application.

Bronwyn Sneed, director of financial aid at SAU, Bronwyn Sneed, said this is the second year for the College Goal Sunday program which is held all over the state. “This is a great opportunity for prospective students to come and have help with financial aid forms,” added Sneed.

College Goal Sunday was originally created by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association with funding from Lilly Endowment, Inc. and supplemental financial support from the Lumina Foundation for Education. In 2007, the Arkansas Department of Higher Education received approval of a three-year, $150,000 grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education to fund the implementation of the College Goal Sunday program in Arkansas. Currently, 42 states host a College Goal Sunday event and more than 1160 students and families attended College Goal Sunday in 2007. Those families were able to receive personal, hands-on assistance in completing the college financial aid application. More than 650 Arkansans volunteered their time to assist families at College Goal Sunday.

According to statewide coordinator for Arkansas College Goal Sunday, Scott Medlin: “The Arkansas College Goal Sunday program is an effort by hundreds of volunteers from across Arkansas…with the common goal of making sure that the process of applying for financial aid for college does not become an obstacle that would keep any person from pursuing an education beyond high school. By attending a College Goal Sunday event, participants will receive free assistance in completing the FAFSA, and will walk away with a completed financial aid application and the satisfaction of knowing they have tackled on of the biggest steps in getting ready to go to college.”

For more information, contact Medlin at 479-739-8400 or call the Arkansas Department of Higher Education at (800) 54-STUDY. A complete listing of College Goal Sunday locations is available at www.arcollegegoalsunday.org.

Reagan, a bestselling author and radio talk show in his own right, spoke to a full house September 18 at the Reynolds Center Grand Hall for the Farmers Bank & Trust Distinguished Speaker Series.

The event helped raise $32,000 for the SAU Foundation and also helps fund scholarships for deserving young students who might not be able to pay for college otherwise.

“My dad truly believed in education,” Reagan said. “Who knows if one of these students you are helping will grow up to be president of the United States?”

Reagan said his father’s legacy as president was likely created because he did not strive to create one. But his legacy was truly formed as he built a relationship with the last leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, witnessed the end of the Cold War with the removal of the Berlin Wall and helped to rebuild America’s economy. But what his son remembers most about his father is his sense of humor. Reagan learned early on that if he was going to understand his father, he would have to learn how to understand parables.

“My dad never told you if you were right or wrong unless you were a Russian,” Reagan said, causing laughter to erupt in the audience.

Of his mother, Jane Wyman who passed away in the week before Reagan’s scheduled appearance at SAU, Reagan said he could not thank her more for the tough love she showed him. When he was fired from his radio talk show to be replaced by Rush Limbaugh in 1992, Reagan called his mother feeling sorry for himself and wondering where his life would take him next.

“She said, ‘Michael, shut up and keep driving,’ ” he said. “And I did and I celebrated my 16 years on radio on September 7 this year.”

Early in his childhood when he wanted a 10-speed Schwinn bike, she told him that he would have to earn money towards the bike by getting a job as a paper boy. Her explanation to him was simple.

“She said that if she gave me everything I wanted then I would grow up to be a 40-year-old child,” he said. “She said, ‘I build men, not boys. I want you to grow up to be a 40-year-old man.’”

Reagan said he ultimately thanks her for her tough love.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Martin Hawron of New Boston, Tx., who is considering majoring in engineering and physics, and Sydney Kilgore of Camden, Ark., who is planning to major in sociology and history. Both of the students were asked to stand and be recognized.

“I think the scholarship is just a reflection on all our hard work, but this event is pretty special, it is flattering,” Kilgore said.

This was the third year for the Farmers Bank & Trust Distinguished Speaker Series. Speakers of the past were Steve Forbes and Oliver North.

Representatives from Allied Poultry, a part of the Arkansas Poultry Federation, select the students during an interview process, said Dr. James Tollett, chair of the SAU’s agriculture department. Tollett said about 18 students applied for the scholarships this year.

“Allied Poultry pays for one semester and we pay for the other,” Tollett said. “Most of these students will be in the poultry industry when the graduate.”

In exchange for the scholarship money, students agree to devote two days during the state fair to working in “The Chicken Cooking Kitchen” at the fairgrounds. The proceeds from the booth help keep the scholarship program alive each year.

“This beats student loans hands down - those are tricky; they tend to want it back,” said Japheth May, one of the six recipients of the scholarships. “(Allied Poultry) pays us pretty good wages.”

The students who received the scholarship are Teresa Gaus, an agricultural sciences major from Beaumont, Tx.; Brant Henry, an agricultural education major of Dekalb, Tx.; Megan Lee, an agricultural business major from DeQueen, Ark.; Japheth May, an agricultural business major from Springhill, Ark.; Kyle Risley, an agricultural business major from Mena, Ark.; and Ashley Shelby, an agricultural business major from Maud, Tx.

“It has helped me out a whole bunch, I don’t know if I could do it without the help,” said Henry.

With six scholarship recipients, SAU is the second largest recipient of the Allied Poultry scholarships in the state, falling only behind the University of Arkansas, Tollett said.
